- The course is designed to provide professionals with a thorough understanding of the increasing complexities of the WASH sector.
It teaches students up-to-date contextual and technical skills to plan, design and implement sustainable WASH activities and programmes within the framework of the fundamental principles of the sector, namely public health and equitable access to water supply and sanitation services.
Designed to contribute to Agenda 2030 (SDG 6) by focusing on all aspects of sustainable WASH interventions, this course is practice-oriented.
Its aim is to link theory and research results with the reality/complexity of WASH practices on the ground.
- Obiettivi
- After completing this course, participants will be able to:
- identify and analyse context-specific challenges and plan tailor-made WASH interventions to improve sustainable access to WASH services and facilities in complex institutional environments, both in the field of cooperation and humanitarian aid
- conduct a context-specific public health risk analysis of WASH services and design appropriate problem-solving strategies
- conduct a systematic environmental, social and technical WASH analysis, both in urban and rural contexts, and design appropriate intervention strategies
- confidently implement the wide range of WASH intervention tools: from technical approaches in water supply and sanitation to current practices developed in the field of hygiene promotion, as well as sectoral assessment tools
- Destinatari
- Professionals in WASH and development related disciplines, who would like to deepen their knowledge of water, sanitation and hygiene in both humanitarian and development contexts.
Admission is reserved for holders of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
Candidates who do not meet the requirements, but who have significant experience in the sector, can be admitted.
For participation in single teaching modules, specific requirements are necessary.
- Requisiti
- The course is designed to support working professionals from low- and middle- income countries and is ideal for consultants and sector professionals employed by:
- international development and humanitarian agencies
- civil society or non-government organisations
- government agencies
Each admission request will be individually examined.
All classes are taught in English.
- Certificato
- Course participants will receive the Certificate of Advanced Studies after successful completion of the final written exam, which covers the three theoretical modules. The exam will take place at the beginning of the practice module, in Mendrisio, Switzerland. In case of failure, the exam can be orally repeated at the end of the practice module.

- The three theoretical modules will be taught on-line from March to June 2023:
- Module 1: Drinking water and public health
- Module 2: Environmental Sanitation
- Module 3: Sustainable water supply
- Module 4: Practical fieldwork
The practice module will be taught in person.

- The CAS is organised as a "blended" course, consisting of three e-learning theoretical modules (approximately 20-25 hours each) that
take place between February-June 2023, and a practice module, which will take place for 9-10 days in Mendrisio - Switzerland (between
September 15th and October 23rd, 2023).

The enrollment fee includes full board accommodation, from arrival at venue until departure (providing basic accommodation in shared rooms).
Transportation to and from the course location is at the participants' own expenses.
The Programme Management has no bursary provisions for applicants of this course.
